Before You Arrive

When you first contact the clinic you will speak to either Dee or Anna, who form our friendly reception team. If you would like to speak to a chiropractor directly then please ask and we will ensure that this does happen. Feel free to ask any questions, and if you decide to make an appointment we have the option of both male or female chiropractors. It is important to us that you feel at ease when you come and see us.

Your First Visit

(Please allow 45-60 mins)

On your first visit to the clinic, you will be welcomed by one of our reception team. They will help make you comfortable in our waiting area and ask you to fill in a case form, detailing you and your family’s previous medical history, your lifestyle, the presenting complaint and any previous treatment which you may have had. It is helpful if you can arrive ten minutes early to enable you to complete this prior to your consultation.

Next, one of our chiropractors will take you into a private consulting room where we will start with a discussion about you, your health and your reasons for seeking chiropractic care. You will be asked some detailed questions and listened to attentively, so your complaint can be fully understood. If, at this point it seems that we may be able to help you then, with your permission, we will proceed to a thorough chiropractic examination. However, should we feel that you are not suitable for chiropractic care then we will refer you to your GP or a suitable specialist.

Examination

Once your case history is complete, your chiropractor will assess you to confirm any early ideas about your problem. Our examination procedures have been designed to give us the maximum amount of information with the least amount of discomfort. Some of the Postural, Orthopaedic and Neurological tests may be familiar if you have been to your GP or a consultant before and some will be unique to Chiropractic.

These tests will give us the information to advise you which nerves, muscles and joints are involved in your complaint.

Report of Findings

Before you receive any treatment it is very important that you completely understand the situation. You will therefore be given a very thorough and detailed “report of findings” detailing, in simple language, what structures are likely to be involved in your condition and the best way forward, whether that is to commence chiropractic treatment, referral for imaging (Xray/MRI) or to another healthcare professional.

If chiropractic is the route for you then we will inform you about how we propose to manage your case, the time-scales and costs involved and any likely recurrence of your condition. When you are happy with this information, treatment can begin, often at the first visit for straightforward complaints.

Chiropractic Treatment

Treatment will be provided on the first visit at the discretion of the Chiropractor, and if deemed in the patient’s best interest at that time. Otherwise, advice or referral for further tests or to see other Healthcare Providers will be recommended instead.

We use a wide range of manual techniques designed to relieve pain, improve function and promote healing.

Our chiropractic treatment often involves safe, often gentle, specific adjustments, done by hand, to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. Most often, this requires a short thrust to a joint that can result in an audible ‘crack’, and may bring relief of symptoms as well as an increased feeling of well-being. The ‘crack’ is simply the sound of bubbles of gas popping in the fluid of the joint as the pressure is released.

Apart from the adjustment, we may also use a range of additional methods including: mobilisation, ultrasound, interferential therapy as well as soft and deep tissue techniques including trigger point therapy and massage. Rehabilitation exercise, postural, ergonomic, and dietary advice is also routinely included to provide an integrated and holistic approach to help prevent a recurrence of the problem.

A large part of getting better is up to you, so please follow any instructions and advice carefully and completely.

Treatment Plan

Your chiropractor will devise and provide a comprehensive tailor made package of care based on your presentation, case history, clinical experience and recent research and may involve any of the above discussed interventions.

Some conditions will inevitably take longer than others to resolve. There may be a number of individual factors involved which may affect the outcome. These factors will be considered continuously and two way communication between yourself and the chiropractor will be ongoing throughout your care. No treatment will be received without your consent and you are free to terminate treatment at any time.
