Pregnancy-Related Pelvic & Back Pain Treatment in Edinburgh
Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain is common, and for many women it can significantly affect comfort, sleep, and day-to-day movement. Seeing a pregnancy chiropractor can help relieve symptoms, improve mobility, and support a more comfortable pregnancy at every stage.
Pregnancy brings incredible changes to your body — but these changes can also place significant strain on your pelvis, spine and surrounding muscles. Many expectant mothers experience pelvic girdle pain (PGP), symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), hip and groin pain, or lower back pain, especially as pregnancy progresses.
According to NICE, around 1 in 5 women develop pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy, and UK research shows that over 50% experience lower back pain.
At Morningside Chiropractic in Edinburgh, our team offers gentle, safe and evidence-based care designed to reduce pain, improve mobility and help you enjoy a more comfortable pregnancy.
Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?
Yes — chiropractic care is considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a properly trained professional.
At Morningside Chiropractic, your treatment is adapted specifically for each stage of pregnancy using gentle, low-force techniques. We use pregnancy cushions and side-lying positions to ensure complete comfort, and no pressure is ever placed on your abdomen.
Both of our chiropractors, Vicky and Katie, have undertaken postgraduate training in pregnancy care, allowing us to safely support women experiencing pelvic girdle pain, back pain, and related symptoms.
When Should You See a Pregnancy Chiropractor?
You don’t need to wait until pain becomes severe.
Many women benefit from chiropractic care as soon as they notice:
Persistent pelvic or lower back discomfort
Pain when walking, turning in bed, or getting dressed
Increasing stiffness or reduced mobility
Symptoms affecting sleep or daily activity
Early treatment can help prevent symptoms from worsening and make the later stages of pregnancy significantly more comfortable.
What Does a Pregnancy Chiropractor Do?
A pregnancy chiropractor focuses on the changes that occur in the pelvis, spine, and surrounding muscles during pregnancy.
Treatment may include:
Gentle joint mobilisation or adjustment
Soft tissue work to relieve tension
Techniques such as the Webster Technique
Advice on posture, movement, and daily activities
These approaches can be particularly helpful if you’re experiencing back pain or symptoms of sciatica, both of which can become more noticeable as your body adapts to pregnancy.
Are You Experiencing Any of These Symptoms?
If any of the following sound familiar, chiropractic care may help:
Pain at the front or back of the pelvis
Sharp pain at the pubic bone
Clicking, grinding or instability in the pelvis
Lower back pain or sciatica-like symptoms
Pain while walking, turning in bed or climbing stairs
Difficulty standing on one leg (e.g., putting on trousers)
Hip, groin or gluteal pain
Trouble getting comfortable when sleeping
Pain worsening as your bump grows
These symptoms are common — and treatable with the right approach
While many people associate back pain with pregnancy, we also provide expert care for back pain and sciaticaoutside of pregnancy at our Edinburgh clinic.
What Are PGP and SPD?
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
PGP refers to pain originating in one or more of the pelvic joints — often the sacroiliac joints or the pubic symphysis. It may radiate into the hips, groin, glutes or thighs and often becomes more noticeable with walking, shifting weight, or prolonged positions.
PGP is caused by a combination of:
ligament softening
increased joint movement
postural changes
load on the pelvis as your baby grows
It can affect daily movement and quality of life — but responds well to targeted treatment.
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
SPD is a specific type of PGP involving irritation or excessive movement of the pubic symphysis joint at the very front of the pelvis.
Women often describe:
sharp, stabbing, or burning pain in the pubic region
pain widening the legs
discomfort when walking or rolling in bed
difficulty climbing stairs or getting out of the car
With appropriate care, SPD is very manageable and often improves significantly.
Why Treat Pregnancy Pain Early?
Addressing pelvic or back pain early in pregnancy offers several benefits:
Prevents symptoms from worsening as pregnancy progresses
Improves movement and daily comfort
Reduces stress on pelvic joints and supporting muscles
Supports better sleep
Helps maintain an active pregnancy
Contributes to smoother postpartum recovery
Reduces recurrence in future pregnancies
Early intervention = a more comfortable pregnancy.

Postnatal Recovery and Ongoing Back & Pelvic Care
While pregnancy-related pelvic and low back pain often improves after birth, it does not always resolve immediately. Many women continue to experience discomfort in the weeks or months following delivery due to ongoing changes in posture, reduced core stability, fatigue, and the new physical demands of caring for a baby.
Activities such as lifting, feeding, carrying and settling your baby — often performed repeatedly throughout the day and night — can place additional strain on the spine and pelvis, particularly if pain or movement restriction was present during pregnancy.
For this reason, developing good movement and lifting habits early is an important part of postnatal recovery. Practical strategies around safe lifting, supported feeding positions, baby carrying and adapting as your child grows can make a significant difference to long-term comfort.
You may find our guide on tips for new parents to help avoid back pain helpful, which provides practical, evidence-based advice to protect your back and pelvis as you transition from pregnancy into early parenthood.

Understanding Pregnancy Pain
Understanding what’s happening in your body during pregnancy can make a big difference to how you manage symptoms. We’ve put together a detailed guide explaining the causes of back and pelvic pain during pregnancy, including why it develops and what you can do about it.
Yes. Chiropractic care is considered safe throughout all stages of pregnancy when performed by a
trained pregnancy chiropractor. At Morningside Chiropractic, our techniques are specifically adapted
for expectant mothers using comfortable pregnancy pillows, side-lying positioning and gentle
mobilisation methods.
Our two chiropractors with postgraduate training in pregnancy-related musculoskeletal care ensure
that every treatment is tailored to support your changing body safely and effectively.
PGP occurs when the joints of the pelvis – typically the sacroiliac joints or the pubic symphysis –
become irritated or move unevenly. This can be due to:
hormonal softening of ligaments
increased joint movement
postural changes
growth and weight of the baby
altered muscle activation
reduced core stability
These biomechanical changes can lead to pain in the pelvis, hips, buttocks, groin or thighs. Early
assessment and treatment often reduce the severity and duration of symptoms.
Both fall under the umbrella of pregnancy-related pelvic pain:
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP): pain in one or more pelvic joints, including the
sacroiliac joints and/or pubic symphysis.
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD): a specific type of PGP involving irritation or
excessive movement of the pubic symphysis, the joint at the front of the pelvis.
SPD is typically felt as sharp, localised pain in the pubic region, often with clicking or difficulty
widening the legs. At our Edinburgh clinic, both conditions are commonly treated and respond well to
gentle, targeted chiropractic care.
You should seek pregnancy-specific chiropractic care if you experience:
pelvic, groin or pubic pain
lower back pain
difficulty walking, climbing stairs or turning in bed
pain standing on one leg
discomfort that worsens as your pregnancy progresses
Early care helps prevent symptoms from worsening and supports a more comfortable pregnancy. Our
chiropractors can help at any stage, from early pregnancy to the final trimester.
Every woman’s recovery is unique. While many experience improvement after giving birth, others
continue to experience discomfort due to:
reduced core stability after pregnancy
feeding and carrying postures
lack of sleep and fatigue
increased physical demands of caring for a baby
asymmetrical lifting and hip-hiking
returning too quickly to household or work tasks
Your chiropractor will assess your postpartum recovery and provide guidance on core rehabilitation,
feeding positions, lifting mechanics, lifestyle adjustments and hands-on treatment when appropriate.
Postnatal chiropractic support helps reduce the likelihood of persistent pelvic or back pain, setting
you up for a healthier, more comfortable postnatal period.
Chiropractic care does not turn breech babies. However, techniques such as the Webster Technique,
used by our pregnancy-trained chiropractors, help optimise pelvic alignment and reduce tension in
surrounding soft tissues.
A more balanced pelvis may improve overall comfort and create an environment that encourages optimal
fetal positioning, but it is not a direct breech treatment. We always recommend discussing breech
concerns with your midwife or obstetric team.
Yes. Pregnancy massage can be an excellent complement to chiropractic care. Our therapist Rosie
Evans, trained specifically in pregnancy massage, helps relieve muscle tightness around the hips,
glutes, low back and pelvic region — reducing stress on irritated joints and improving overall
comfort.
Massage combined with chiropractic often provides the best results for pregnancy-related pelvic and
back pain.
Morningside Chiropractic provides one of Edinburgh’s most comprehensive pregnancy musculoskeletal
services, offering:
two chiropractors with postgraduate pregnancy training
specialist pregnancy massage therapy on-site
a combined 75+ years of clinical experience across the team
